When it comes to testing new technologies, there is always an element of the unknown for brands. While tech investments may not immediately translate to a revenue bump, willingness to experiment could radically transform the fashion industry, according to Ommy Akhe, a creative technologist specialising in experimental software and augmented reality prototypes, who spoke at The BoF Professional Summit: New Frontiers in Fashion and Technology.
“Understanding your customers, the things they value, the challenges you can help them overcome and what gets them excited — it's essential to meet users where they are,” says Ahke. “The only constant is change. So why not join the journey and start enjoying the current future?”
- Consumers today are younger, spend more time online and are used to valuing arbitrary digital assets like follower counts and verified check marks. This means they are also more apt to spend money on digital items that hold value in the real world.
- The tools that will build the metaverse — including 5G, artificial intelligence and virtual reality, for example — are well established and consumers are used to interacting with them.
- Ahke’s digital skins projects overlay dynamic imagery on bags, clothes and shoes through a phone lens. Brands can implement this sort of technology to drive loyalty and give buyers more avenues for expression.

On a cold, cloudy day in Paris, in the shadow of the Colonne Vendôme, Valentino’s creative director Alessandro Michele prepares for his first haute couture show for the iconic Italian fashion house. “It’s a beginning… like every beginning, it’s beautiful but also stressful.” As he looks over his collection, Michele reflects on his approach to beauty in contrast to the legendary Valentino Garavani’s. In the atelier, skilled artisans meticulously sew and stitch, their hands moving with practiced precision as they transform delicate fabrics into intricate masterpieces. Michele’s stunning couture collection includes a sculptural floral dress—equal parts 1950s tapestry and the makings of an adventurous child with scissors and an outdated carpet.

With cofounders Benoit Pagotto and Chris Le, Steven Vasilev launched RTFKT (pronounced artifact) in 2020 to create digital clothing and sneakers for the metaverse. Vasilev previously crafted real-life custom kicks for celebs. “I saw how sneakers were becoming status symbols for Gen Z kids, how physical marketplaces worked, and I thought it could be more frictionless with digital assets.” In May 2021, RTFKT raised $8 million from Andreessen Horowitz and others and was acquired by Nike that December for an undisclosed price. This past April, as the NFT craze peaked, Nike worked with RTFKT to launch its first collection for the metaverse, releasing 20,000 digital sneakers dubbed Nike Dunk Genesis CRYPTOKICKS. Some special editions fetched upward of $130,000 each.
